Veterinary Exam

Regular veterinary exams allow us to keep up-to-date with any changes in your pet’s health between visits. They include a physical exam and other diagnostic testing to help us assess your pet’s overall health and any gaps that need to be filled. Based on your pet’s age and if they have any underlying health concerns, we’ll recommend more frequent exams.

When should my pet have their veterinary exam?

Veterinary exams aren’t necessarily for when your pet is feeling sick. They’re more like routine checkups, similar to the ones we have with our primary care provider, to determine ways we can continue to support your pet’s wellbeing. We recommend you book an annual appointment for your pet. Puppies and kittens need to see us every few weeks when they are a few months old whereas older pets should see us twice a year. If your pet is due for their exam, please contact us at 705.476.3913.

What will you check during a veterinary exam?

During your pet’s upcoming veterinary exam, come prepared to share observations about their health and answer questions about their daily routine and habits. During their appointment, you can also expect the following:

  • Physical exams like listening to their heart rate and examining different parts of their body for abnormalities
  • Coat checks to assess their skin health
  • Assessments of their current diet and weight
  • Assessments of their preventive healthcare measures like vaccinations and parasite control plan
  • Dental care
  • Assessments of their behaviour and routine habits
  • Diagnostic bloodwork

    What happens after the exam?

After the thorough exam, our veterinary team will use our observations and tests to inform you of the type of care we provide. For example, if your pet is overweight, we’ll recommend a weight management appointment to create a plan to help your pet reach a healthy weight. If your pet’s bloodwork reveals earlier signs of an underlying health condition, we’ll discuss treatment options.
