Obesity can negatively impact your pet’s health, making them more susceptible to diseases like diabetes, heart and kidney failure. It can be hard for you to tell if your pet is obese. Our veterinary team can assess your pet’s metrics to determine if they need the support of a weight management plan to reach a healthier weight.
How does weight management work in pets?
The goal of weight management is to support your pet with diet, exercise and lifestyle changes to help them achieve a healthier weight. Based on factors like your pet’s age, breed and health, we’ll determine a healthy weight. Weight management is a collaborative effort between our veterinary team and you, the pet owner. Though we can make recommendations for your pet’s weight management plan, you are their biggest supporter throughout this experience. Since they depend on you for food and other necessities, you are the best person to help them during their weight loss journey.
What changes can I make at home to support them?
There are a range of modifications you can make at home to ease your pet into their weight management plan. Based on the individualized plan created by our veterinary team, we’ll make recommendations on the best ways to support your pet. Some general things you can do include:
- Limiting treats to only 10% of their daily caloric intake
- Ensuring your pet’s food is only accessible to them during designated meal times
- Rewarding your pet with play or other activities they enjoy instead of food
- Avoid feeding your pet table scraps
- Incorporating healthy snacks like peas and popcorn in their diet
What happens when my pet reaches their goal weight?
Weight management is not a destination. It is a lifelong commitment. Your pet’s weight might fluctuate at times but it’s important to maintain healthy practices like behavioural modifications and food regimen. Our team will review your pet’s weight management plan overtime to make adjustments based on any changes in their health.
